The Circular Gallifreyan Alphabet
Consonants are the building blocks of Gallifreyan words. Each letter is formed by combining a base shape with a decoration pattern.
The Rules
- 4 base shapes × 8 decoration patterns = 31 consonants (one combination is not used)
- Base shapes: Crescent (Ω), Circle (○), Arc (∩), Bisected Circle (⊖)
- Decorations: None, 1-4 dots, or 1-3 lines
- To identify a letter: Find its shape first, then count its dots or lines
Visual Reference
The four basic consonant shapes form the foundation of the alphabet:
Examples
Let's break down the letter T as an example:
- Identify the shape: T uses an arc shape (∩)
- Count decorations: T has no dots or lines (empty)
- Find in table: Arc row + Empty column = T
Now try with WH:
- Shape: Also an arc (∩) - same shape as T
- Decoration: Has 1 dot
- Result: Arc + 1 dot = WH
The pattern continues with the same arc shape: T (no decoration) → WH (1 dot) → R (2 dots) → Y (3 dots) → Z (4 dots)
Here are four letters to practice identifying. Look at each one and find its shape, then count decorations:
PH
PH: Circle shape + 1 dot
W
W: Arc shape + 2 lines
ND
ND: Crescent shape + 4 dots
TH
TH: Bisected Circle shape + no decoration
